Like last season, this year’s matinee presents two concerts in two venues. It will again take place in part at the intimate and elegant Refugium in Lunz, in cooperation with the Brücken festival, a renowned music and literature festival in Mürz. The artistic director Ernst Kovacic has curated the performance of the two young musicians Mina Zakić and Symon Kałużny. Not only does this duo perform contemporary pieces, they elaborate on their performance as well. In this way they break the barrier which often makes it hard for listeners to truly engage in new and contemporary music. We from the wellenkænge festival are complementing these artists with another brilliant duo, Willi Landl and Michael Hornek. They are entertaining, eccentric and musically brilliant. On this Sunday we are building bridges. Not only to our befriended festival in Mürz, but also between different musical spheres and places in Lunz. For the second half, the matinee will transform the local church into an invigorating world of new music.

Willli Landl

Born in upper Austria, Willi Landl studied voice and vocal pedagogy at the Anton Bruckner private university in Linz. Following his degree, he lived in Hamburg for five years. Since then, he is well known in the German-speaking region as a singer and songwriter, with hitherto four albums released under his own name. His music leaves a lasting impression – he combines uniquely erratic and at the same time moving and poetic metaphors that blend together into hymns to love, fantastic dreams and self-portraits in musical form. Willi Landl’s songs don’t go in one ear and out the other with choruses flaunting the word “love”. The beauty of his queer lyrical expression lies between the lines. He is over-the-top, he exaggerates, he condenses. With ease he cannot only sing words like “pants bottom” or “nailpolish-drunk”, but give them poetic meaning.

Michael Hornek

Michael Hornek began learning the piano at a very young age. With 15 he began studying classical piano at the conservatory in Innsbruck and went on to study jazz piano at the conservatory in Linz. He continued studying in New York and toured with Nouvelle Cousine and Bumi Fian. In 2006 he founded the band Yumag together with Peter O’Mara, Patrick Scales and Christian Lettner. The group released the CD “Live in Congress”. He became a permanent member of Klaus Doldinger Passport in 2009 and hast worked on projects regularly with Thomas Gansch. Michael Horneks greatest talent is his capacity for variety. He can weave complex harmonies or push the boundaries of song structure. His playing switches from Brecht to Hollywood, from Zappa to Schubert, from Jazz to destructing massacres.
