Two violas, two voices, two classically trained musicians, performers, improvisers, and composers. Jelena Popržan has been a fixture of the Austrian music scene for well over a decade and is considered “one of the most versatile and adaptable musicians in the country” (oe1 radio). Whether in her many music projects or in the theatre, she captivates audiences with her stage presence and charisma. With her well-equipped toolbox full of experimental playing, preparation, and singing techniques, Flora Geißelbrecht builds a meta-instrument from her viola and herself that seems to navigate jazz, folk, and new music in a peculiar yet familiar way. Flora and Jelena had already been mutual fans and role models before they met in person for the first time in the summer of 2022 at a Monday Improviser’s Session in Vienna. They only had one viola to play, so they made a short appearance with it, their two bows, and their two voices. And thus, the duo was born.
